In treatment of all these themes of memory, synesthesia, and music; symbol, liturgical symbolism, and mysticism: Time, and dreams; he shows close affinity with Baudelaire, and varying degrees of affinity with Symbolism proper, but everywhere he makes the novel a flexible instrument for expression of subject matter, and use of technique, hitherto considered the domain of poetry and the other arts, such as music, even the province of metaphysics (time) and psycho-analysis (sleep and dreams, memory and synesthesia).<p

    Exploration of long-period oscillations in an Hα prominence

    Context. In previous work, we studied a prominence which appeared like a tornado in a movie made from 193 Å filtergrams obtained with the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) imager aboard the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO). The observations in Hα obtained simultaneously during two consecutive sequences of one hour with the Multi-channel Subtractive Double Pass Spectrograph (MSDP) operating at the solar tower in Meudon showed that the cool plasma inside the tornado was not rotating around its vertical axis. Furthermore, the evolution of the Dopplershift pattern suggested the existence of oscillations of periods close to the time-span of each sequence. Aims. The aim of the present work is to assemble the two sequences of Hα observations as a full data set lasting two hours to confirm the existence of oscillations, and determine their nature. Methods. After having coaligned the Doppler maps of the two sequences, we use a Scargle periodogram analysis and cosine fitting to compute the periods and the phase of the oscillations in the full data set. Results. Our analysis confirms the existence of oscillations with periods between 40 and 80 min. In the Dopplershift maps, we identify large areas with strong spectral power. In two of them, the oscillations of individual pixels are in phase. However, in the top area of the prominence, the phase is varying slowly, suggesting wave propagation. Conclusions. We conclude that the prominence does not oscillate as a whole structure but exhibits different areas with their own oscillation periods and characteristics: standing or propagating waves. We discuss the nature of the standing oscillations and the propagating waves. These can be interpreted in terms of gravito-acoustic modes and magnetosonic waves, respectively

    On mesogranulation, network formation and supergranulation

    We present arguments which show that in all likelihood mesogranulation is not a true scale of solar convection but the combination of the effects of both highly energetic granules, which give birth to strong positive divergences (SPDs) among which we find exploders, and averaging effects of data processing. The important role played by SPDs in horizontal velocity fields appears in the spectra of these fields where the scale \sim4 Mm is most energetic; we illustrate the effect of averaging with a one-dimensional toy model which shows how two independent non-moving (but evolving) structures can be transformed into a single moving structure when time and space resolution are degraded. The role of SPDs in the formation of the photospheric network is shown by computing the advection of floating corks by the granular flow. The coincidence of the network bright points distribution and that of the corks is remarkable. We conclude with the possibility that supergranulation is not a proper scale of convection but the result of a large-scale instability of the granular flow, which manifests itself through a correlation of the flows generated by SPDs.Comment: 10 pages, 11 figures, to appear in Astronomy and Astrophysic

    The extensive spelean deposits in the Western Desert of Egypt at Crystal Mountain (Gebel Bellorat) are considered to be 11-10 Ma, confirming the 'Vallesian' estimate made by Heissig (1982). Several new faunal elements have been discovered including anurans, snakes, soricids, bats, galagids, hystricids and glirids. This fauna indicates that the region was appreciably more humid 11-10 Ma than it is today, with at least 750 mm and possibly as much as 1,200 mm mean annual rainfall. The role of karst processes in the development of the oases of the Western Desert that may have been underestimated by previous researchers is emphasized

    The effects of pre-retirement factors and retirement route on circumstances in retirement: findings from the Whitehall II study

    Retirement has traditionally been seen as the beginning of old age. It has been depicted as mandatory expulsion from the workforce and seen to mark the transition to a period of ill health and poverty. Such ideas and associations are however being challenged in the developed world by socio-demographic changes in retirement and old age. People in the United Kingdom as elsewhere are living longer and healthier lives, and many older people have access to non-state incomes that afford them a reasonable standard of living in retirement. There is however still concern that inequalities persist into old age. Data from two waves of the British Whitehall II study have been used to assess the relative effects of occupational grade, psychological and general health during working life, and retirement patterns or pathways on activities, attitudes to health and income in retirement. The results show that the majority of the sample reported good health, financial security and overall satisfaction with life, but with observable inequalities. Regression analyses demonstrate that pre-retirement circumstances generally had a greater effect on later life than the retirement route or pathway. Retirement no longer represents a drastic break between working and post-work life but rather, the results suggest, there are continuities between the two periods. It is concluded that the main causes of inequalities in retirement are work-based rather than in retirement itself

    Estimation of solar prominence magnetic fields based on the reconstructed 3D trajectories of prominence knots

    We present an estimation of the lower limits of local magnetic fields in quiescent, activated, and active (surges) promineces, based on reconstructed 3-dimensional (3D) trajectories of individual prominence knots. The 3D trajectories, velocities, tangential and centripetal accelerations of the knots were reconstructed using observational data collected with a single ground-based telescope equipped with a Multi-channel Subtractive Double Pass imaging spectrograph. Lower limits of magnetic fields channeling observed plasma flows were estimated under assumption of the equipartition principle. Assuming approximate electron densities of the plasma n_e = 5*10^{11} cm^{-3} in surges and n_e = 5*10^{10} cm^{-3} in quiescent/activated prominences, we found that the magnetic fields channeling two observed surges range from 16 to 40 Gauss, while in quiescent and activated prominences they were less than 10 Gauss.     This study on middle Miocene mammalian faunas from Tagus'basin deals particularly with some small mammals hitherto undescribed from Portugal, including a new Glirid (Paraglirulus scalabicensis nov. sp.); it allows an accurate datation by biostratigraphical standards, Megacricetodon crusafonti, Fahlbuschia darocensis, Cricetodon jotae being characteristic of mammalian MN6 unit, thus their age is nearly that of Sansan and Manchones (however the presence of Peridyromys hamadryas and Lagopsis verus do suggest, amidst this biozone, a somewhat later age than Sansan's); it contributes with indirect correlation data with marine formations, as underlying oyster-bearing beds most probably are in correspondance to the apogee of the same transgression that deposed near Lisbon ”schlier" facies from VI-a division (Serravalian, Blow's zones 10-13, Globorotalia meyeri zone); the diversity of mammalian assemblages is surely related to an environement with varied biotopes, whose characterisation becomes easier if account is taken of the preceding papers on mollusks (G. Truc) and Cyprinid fishes (J. Gaudant), and also according to some unpublished paleobotanical data (J. Pais). A table with a synthesis of all paleontological data so far known is presented

    On the existence of oscillations in solar filaments observed in H alpha and C IV lines

    Time sequence observations of filaments in both the H alpha line and the 1548 A C IV line were analyzed with the Fourier transform technique in the frequency range (1 - 10 mHz). No oscillation is detected in filaments except at the footpoints where a steady velocity gradient is large. The energy is probably due to convective motions rather than pressure oscillations
